Canalbox Fiber Router Administration & Wi-Fi Setup

Learn how to access, navigate, and manage a Canalbox fiber optical network terminal (ONT/router), including logging in via hardware serial numbers and reconfiguring wireless…

This practical course guides Canalbox fiber internet subscribers through administrative management of their home router. Learners will discover how to locate router authentication credentials, establish local administrative access via the web portal, explore dashboard metrics, and securely update wireless network credentials across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands.

Section 1: Access Requirements & Hardware Identification

Understand the prerequisite network environment and identify device hardware details needed for authentication.

Lesson 1.1: Understanding Management Types and Finding the Serial Number

  • Subscription Management vs Box Management
  • Hardware serial number identification on Nokia ONT
  • Local network connectivity requirements

Canalbox provides two distinct customer portals. The Subscription Management portal handles bill payments, plan selections, and renewal dates, and can be accessed remotely over any internet connection. In contrast, Router (Box) Management configures physical hardware and local network settings, requiring the connecting client device (PC, tablet, or phone) to be actively connected to the Canalbox Wi-Fi or LAN. To access Box Management at 'my.canalbox.africa/login', users must supply the router's hardware serial number. On standard Canalbox installations using Nokia fiber routers, this alphanumeric identifier is printed on the hardware label next to the barcode. Attempting to authenticate from outside the local network will prevent successful management access.

Practical work

  1. Inspect your physical Canalbox router and locate the hardware label.
  2. Record the serial number starting with ALCL or the respective manufacturer prefix.
  3. Ensure your workstation or mobile device is connected to the Canalbox Wi-Fi or an Ethernet LAN port.

Section 2: Dashboard Navigation & Wireless Configuration

Authenticate into the router dashboard and modify wireless network settings.

Lesson 2.1: Updating SSID Name and Security Passphrase

  • Dashboard metrics inspection
  • Navigating to My Box -> Wi-Fi
  • Entering New SSID and Passphrase
  • Band tagging (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz) and saving

Once authenticated, the dashboard displays active service information, subscription speeds (such as 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload), and line statuses. To change Wi-Fi settings, locate the primary sidebar navigation on the left-hand side of the interface. Click on 'My Box' to reveal subcategories for 'Wi-Fi' and 'LAN IPv4'. Selecting 'Wi-Fi' displays fields for 'New SSID' (network name) and 'New Wi-Fi passphrase' (security password). Canalbox by default appends band identifiers (such as -2G and -5G) to the designated SSID name across both frequencies. After typing in the desired wireless name and a robust passphrase, scroll to the bottom of the form and click 'Save' to commit the changes. The router will apply settings and disconnect clients using the previous credentials.

Practical work

  1. Navigate to My Box > Wi-Fi in the left sidebar menu.
  2. Input a new network name in the 'New SSID' field.
  3. Input a new secure password in the 'New Wi-Fi passphrase' field.
  4. Click 'Save' and reconnect your devices using the new Wi-Fi credentials.
