Facebook Mobile Account Security: Password Updating & Session Management

Master the step-by-step process of changing your Facebook password and securing your account by auditing and terminating active device sessions on mobile.

This hands-on course teaches essential personal security hygiene on Facebook using the Android/iOS mobile application. Learners will understand how to navigate privacy shortcuts, securely update credentials, and review or terminate active device logins to prevent unauthorized access.

Section 1: Updating Facebook Credentials

Learn how to navigate Facebook mobile settings and execute a secure password update.

Lesson 1.1: Navigating to Privacy Shortcuts and Changing Password

  • App navigation via the hamburger menu
  • Accessing Privacy Shortcuts
  • Credential input requirements

Navigating modern social media applications can often be confusing due to nested menus. In the Facebook mobile application, core security tools are housed under the 'Settings & Privacy' header accessible via the top-right menu (the three horizontal bars). Selecting 'Privacy Shortcuts' takes you directly to a streamlined dashboard where common security operations are organized. Under 'Account Security', tapping 'Change your password' prompts for verification. To complete a password change, Facebook requires your current password to verify identity, followed by entering and re-typing the new password to prevent typing errors. Once filled, selecting 'Save Changes' updates your account authentication.

Practical work

  1. Open the Facebook application and tap the three-line menu icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Scroll down, expand 'Settings & Privacy', and tap 'Privacy Shortcuts'.
  3. Tap 'Change your password' under 'Account Security' and verify the three required password input fields.

Section 2: Session Management and Device Auditing

Audit active logins and terminate sessions across unrecognized or legacy devices.

Lesson 2.1: Auditing and Logging Out of Active Sessions

  • Post-password update prompt options
  • Reviewing recognized devices and locations
  • Individual session termination vs logging out of all sessions

Whenever you change your Facebook password, Facebook prompts you with the option to log out of other devices. This is a critical security step: if your account was compromised or logged in on a public computer, keeping other devices logged in leaves the door open to unauthorized users. By choosing 'Review other devices' and tapping 'Continue', you can see a detailed list containing device models (e.g., Tecno Camon 15), approximate geographical locations, app types (Facebook app vs. Messenger), and activity timestamps. You have two choices to terminate access: you can tap the three-dot menu next to an individual session and select 'Log Out' (or 'Not You?'), or you can scroll down and tap 'Log Out Of All Sessions'. Confirming this action invalidates all previous authentication tokens across all hardware, requiring re-login with the newly created password.

Practical work

  1. Complete the password update and select 'Review other devices'.
  2. Inspect the list of active sessions for unfamiliar hardware or geographic locations.
  3. Test logging out of an old session individually using the three-dot menu, or select 'Log Out Of All Sessions' and confirm.
