Mastering Android Notification Recovery: Reading Deleted Chat Messages

Learn how to configure third-party Android notification-logging utilities like Notisave to capture and read deleted WhatsApp messages.

This hands-on course covers the architecture and configuration of Android notification logs to safeguard against unread deleted chat messages. Students will learn the mechanics of WhatsApp's message deletion mechanism, how notification interceptors capture push alerts, how to safely configure Android system Notification Access, and how to retrieve messages retracted by senders in real time.

Section 1: App Installation and Permissions Setup

Locate and configure Notisave with the necessary Android system permissions.

Lesson 1.1: Installing and Authorizing Notisave

  • App search and installation via Google Play Store
  • Enabling Android system Notification Access
  • Managing file permissions and app blocking lists

WhatsApp's 'Delete for everyone' feature removes messages from both the sender and recipient devices, replacing the original content with a deletion notice. To retain access to messages that arrive when a user is offline or not looking at their device, Android notification loggers can be employed. Notisave works by listening to the Android system notification tray. Whenever an incoming WhatsApp message creates a notification, Notisave captures the sender name, message body, and arrival timestamp. Even if the sender subsequently issues a deletion event that removes the notification from the system bar and clears the message from the WhatsApp chat thread, the historical log within Notisave remains intact. For Notisave to function, users must explicitly grant Android 'Notification access' in the system settings and grant permissions to access local files and media. Without notification access, the application cannot listen to incoming status bar events.

Practical work

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android device and search for 'Notisave'.
  2. Install the application and launch it.
  3. Advance through the onboarding slides and toggle on 'Notisave' in the Android Notification Access settings screen.
  4. Confirm the prompt allowing access to photos, media, and files.

Section 2: Testing and Message Retrieval

Verify notification archiving through real-time message sending, deletion, and recovery.

Lesson 2.1: Simulating Retraction and Retrieving Chat Logs

  • Sending and deleting test messages on WhatsApp
  • Identifying deletion notices in chat threads
  • Locating archived text inside Notisave

Once Notisave has been granted notification listener permissions, it operates autonomously in the background. In the live test demonstrated in the video, a message ('Hey guys, we are learning how to read deleted WhatsApp messages') is sent and subsequently deleted for everyone by the sender. Opening the WhatsApp application reveals that the chat entry only says 'This message was deleted' alongside the time of deletion. However, switching to Notisave reveals the full notification history organized by contact. Selecting the contact entry opens a conversation timeline containing both the original message text captured from the notification and the subsequent 'This message was deleted' event notification. This confirms that notification interceptors preserve message contents regardless of subsequent server-driven message revocation.

Practical work

  1. Have a contact send a WhatsApp message to your device and immediately select 'Delete for everyone'.
  2. Open WhatsApp to confirm the message displays as 'This message was deleted'.
  3. Launch Notisave, tap the notification log, and select the sender's thread to verify the original message text was recorded.
