Understand active presence indicators and disable online visibility inside the Facebook mobile app.
Lesson 1.1: How Active Indicators Work on Facebook
- Green dot status indicator
- Mutual online visibility
On Facebook and Messenger, active friends are marked with a green indicator dot showing they are currently available. However, this visibility is bidirectional: if you can view that your contacts are online, they can see that you are online as well.
To prevent other users from monitoring your availability, you must modify your account settings. Keep in mind that turning off this feature removes visibility in both directions.
Practical work
- Open your Facebook feed and identify the green active dots displayed on contacts' story avatars or chat lists.
Lesson 1.2: Disabling Facebook Active Status
- Settings & Privacy menu navigation
- Audience and Visibility controls
- Active Status confirmation prompt
To disable your online status in the Facebook app, tap the three-line menu icon in the upper right. Scroll down to select 'Settings & Privacy' and then tap 'Settings'.
Under the settings list, locate 'Active Status'. Tap 'Show when you're active' to switch the toggle off. When the confirmation modal appears stating that you will not be able to see when friends and contacts are active, tap 'TURN OFF'. Upon returning to your feed, active indicators for other users will no longer appear, and your own active status will be concealed.
Practical work
- Navigate to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Active Status in the Facebook mobile app.
- Switch off 'Show when you're active' and confirm by tapping 'TURN OFF'.
- Return to the Facebook home feed to verify that active status dots are no longer displayed.
