Mastering Passport Photo Production & Printing in Adobe Photoshop

Learn how to isolate portrait backgrounds with the Pen Tool, format passport pictures to international standards (3.5x4.5 cm), and construct an 8-photo printable grid on a 4x6…

This hands-on course teaches the complete end-to-end process of turning a standard portrait photo into studio-ready passport pictures using Adobe Photoshop. Learners will master precision edge selection with the Pen Tool, background color replacement, standard ratio cropping, resolution management, and efficient batch layout on standard 4x6 photographic paper.

Section 1: Subject Isolation and Background Replacement

Master Pen Tool tracing and background flood-filling to meet official identification requirements.

Lesson 1.1: Opening the Image and Tracing with the Pen Tool

  • Workspace navigation
  • Zooming with Alt + Scroll
  • Pen Tool path tracing
  • Closing the selection boundary

When preparing passport photos, the original background must often be replaced with a solid identification color such as white or light blue/red. The Pen Tool (P) is the industry standard for clean boundary selection around clothing and shoulders. To trace accurately, zoom in using Alt while scrolling the mouse wheel. Click along the edges of the subject to place anchor points. After reaching the opposite bottom corner, extend your path out and around the frame edges to encircle the entire background area before closing the path at the starting anchor.

Practical work

  1. Open a portrait image in Photoshop CC via File > Open.
  2. Select the Pen Tool and trace the contours of the subject's shoulders, neck, and hair.
  3. Loop the path around the canvas outer border and close the path at the initial anchor point.

Lesson 1.2: Converting Paths and Filling Background Color

  • Make Selection options
  • Color swatch selection
  • Background fill shortcuts (Ctrl+Backspace / Ctrl+Delete)

Once a closed path encompasses the background, right-click inside the workspace and choose 'Make Selection'. Keep the feather radius at default to retain crisp edges, then confirm with OK. To apply the required background tone, click the background color picker icon in the toolbar and select pure white (#FFFFFF) or standard red. Press Ctrl+Backspace or Ctrl+Delete to replace the original scene background with a pristine solid fill.

Practical work

  1. Right-click inside the Pen Tool path and generate a selection.
  2. Set the Photoshop background swatch to pure white.
  3. Execute Ctrl+Backspace or Ctrl+Delete and verify that the background fills cleanly behind the subject.

Section 2: Cropping, Resizing, and Master Export

Format the photo to standard passport specifications and export the master image.

Lesson 2.1: Cropping and Setting Exact Image Dimensions

  • Passport aspect ratio (3.5 x 4.5 cm)
  • Centering facial features
  • Image Size dialog box
  • Print resolution (200-300 ppi)
  • JPEG Export at Maximum quality

Most international identification standards mandate photos measuring 3.5 cm in width by 4.5 cm in height (or 1.5 in by 2 in). In the Crop Tool, specify the 3.5 x 4.5 ratio. Adjust the bounding box so the subject's head is upright, balanced, and centered before confirming the crop. Next, go to Image > Image Size. Confirm units are in Centimeters, enter a Width of 3.5 cm, and specify a print resolution of 200 to 300 ppi. Finally, save the single formatted passport via File > Save As to your desktop as a Maximum Quality JPEG.

Practical work

  1. Use the Crop Tool set to 3.5 x 4.5 ratio to crop your portrait with centered facial framing.
  2. Open Image > Image Size, set the width to 3.5 cm, verify height is 4.5 cm, and set resolution to 300 ppi.
  3. Save the file to your computer as a JPEG with quality set to Maximum (12).

Section 3: Print Preparation & Batch Layout

Arrange multiple passport photos onto standard 4x6 inch photographic paper for printing.

Lesson 3.1: Creating the 4x6 Canvas and Building the Photo Grid

  • 4x6 Landscape preset
  • Placing photos on print canvas
  • Alt + Drag duplicate shortcut
  • Multi-layer selection with Shift
  • Aligning and distributing layers

To prepare photos for physical printout, navigate to File > New, select the Photo tab, and choose 'Landscape 4 x 6' (6x4 inches at 300 ppi). Drag your saved passport JPEG onto this new sheet. Position the first photo in the top left. Hold Alt while clicking and dragging the image downward to duplicate it. Use Shift+Click in the Layers panel to select both layers, then hold Alt while dragging them to the right. Repeat this process until you have an eight-photo grid (two rows of four photos). Select all photo layers and utilize the alignment icons on the top options bar (such as Align Vertical Centers and Distribute Horizontal Centers) to achieve balanced margins and cut lines across the entire 4x6 page.

Practical work

  1. Create a new document using File > New > Photo > Landscape 4 x 6.
  2. Import your passport photo onto the canvas.
  3. Duplicate the photo using Alt + Click & Drag until you have 8 copies.
  4. Select all layers using Shift+Click and apply horizontal and vertical alignment controls.
