Mastering WhatsApp Message Delivery and Read Status

This course guides mobile users through viewing message delivery and read receipts in WhatsApp group conversations. Learn the primary and secondary methods to inspect message info, identify which group members have read your message, and troubleshoot interface variations when standard menu options are hidden.

In WhatsApp group conversations, keeping track of who has seen your announcements or replies is essential. When you send a message in a group, WhatsApp tracks delivery and read receipts individually for every member of the group. While previous versions or certain contexts allowed users to access 'Info' via an overflow three-dot menu, you can always inspect a message directly. By pressing and holding (long pressing) your sent message, the message is highlighted and an action bar appears across the top of your screen. On this bar, tap the circled 'i' symbol to open the 'Message info' screen directly.

Practical work

  1. Open any active WhatsApp group where you have previously sent a text or media message.
  2. Long-press your sent message to highlight it.
  3. Identify the circled 'i' icon on the top action bar and tap it.

Lesson 1.2: Interpreting Message Info and Receipts

Once you open the 'Message info' window, WhatsApp organizes group members into two distinct sections: 'Seen by' and 'Delivered to'. 'Seen by' displays every group member who has opened the chat and viewed your message, accompanied by an indicator showing how many minutes or hours ago they saw it. Below that, the 'Delivered to' section shows group members whose phones received the message via the network, but who have not yet viewed the message inside the group chat.

Practical work

  1. Scroll through the 'Message info' page of your sent message.
  2. Observe which members appear under 'Seen by' versus 'Delivered to'.
  3. Note the elapsed timestamps displayed beneath each contact's name.
