This course guides new creators through launching and configuring a professional YouTube channel. Based directly on practical studio navigation, learners will discover why browser-based management is essential, how brand accounts differ from personal accounts, how to unlock custom thumbnails and longer uploads through verification, and how to input targeted keywords to enhance channel discovery in search engines.

Section 1: Channel Creation and Branding

Learn how to initiate channel creation in a browser, choose between personal and brand account naming, and add core visual and text branding.

Lesson 1.1: Browser Access and Account Setup

  • Browser vs App Interface
  • Google Sign-In
  • Initiating Channel Creation

When establishing a new YouTube presence, using a desktop or mobile web browser is crucial. The native mobile YouTube application simplifies viewing and basic uploads, but conceals critical configuration menus necessary for discovery and compliance. After navigating to youtube.com, sign in with your Google account credentials or follow the account creation workflow if you do not have an active profile. Clicking the top-right profile icon reveals the account menu, from which you select 'Create a channel' to begin.

Practical work

  1. Open a web browser on desktop or mobile and navigate to youtube.com.
  2. Sign in to your Google account or create a fresh account.
  3. Click the user profile icon and select 'Create a channel'.

Lesson 1.2: Brand Name Selection and Initial Customization

  • Personal vs Custom Brand Name
  • Profile Avatar Upload
  • SEO Description and Social Links

YouTube offers two distinct paths when establishing channel identity: 'Use your name' and 'Use a custom name'. Choosing your personal name binds the channel strictly to your first and last name from your Google account. In contrast, 'Use a custom name' creates a Brand Account, enabling you to use single-word titles, project names, or business brands such as 'KIDE Online'. Once created, the setup wizard prompts you to upload a profile picture and compose a channel description under 'Tell viewers about your channel'. This description is an essential discovery asset; search engines analyze its text to understand the channel focus. Creators should weave relevant topical keywords naturally into the text and link their official website and social profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

Practical work

  1. Select 'Use a custom name' and enter your brand channel title.
  2. Accept the terms acknowledging creation of a new Google account with independent settings, then click 'Create'.
  3. Upload a profile image file.
  4. Write a multi-sentence channel description containing target niche keywords.
  5. Add custom website and social media profile URLs, then click 'Save and continue'.

Section 2: Studio Verification and Search Engine Optimization

Configure feature eligibility through phone verification and optimize audience and keyword settings for search engine discovery.

Lesson 2.1: Feature Eligibility and Phone Verification

  • YouTube Studio Settings Access
  • Feature Eligibility Tiers
  • SMS Phone Verification

Accessing advanced channel capabilities requires navigating to YouTube Settings. Clicking your avatar and selecting 'Settings' leads to the account overview, where clicking 'Channel status and features' launches YouTube Studio. Inside Studio, navigate to 'Channel' > 'Feature eligibility'. Standard 'Default features' are activated immediately, but 'Features that require phone verification' remain locked until verified. These include uploading videos longer than 15 minutes, using custom thumbnail images, live streaming, and submitting Content ID appeals. Selecting 'Verify phone number' prompts the creator to choose their country and enter a mobile number to receive a 6-digit SMS code.

Practical work

  1. Click your profile avatar, choose 'Settings', and click 'Channel status and features'.
  2. Navigate to 'Channel' > 'Feature eligibility' in YouTube Studio.
  3. Click 'Verify phone number', choose your country, and enter your phone number.
  4. Submit the 6-digit code received via SMS to complete verification.

Lesson 2.2: Audience Policy, Channel Keywords, and Final Settings

  • COPPA Audience Compliance
  • Subscriber Count Display
  • Channel Discovery Keywords
  • General Studio Defaults

Under 'Channel' > 'Advanced settings', creators must designate their content classification under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). You can declare the channel as made for kids, not made for kids, or choose to review the setting on an individual video basis. This section also allows toggling subscriber count visibility and linking Google Ads accounts. Under 'Channel' > 'Basic info', creators select their Country of residence and define Channel Keywords. Channel keywords function as discovery tags that inform search algorithms about the core subject matter of your channel. Each keyword or keyphrase must be separated by a comma. Once entered, confirm settings across 'Upload defaults' and 'General' (currency setting), then click 'Save' to activate changes on your Channel Dashboard.

Practical work

  1. Open 'Settings' > 'Channel' > 'Advanced settings' and select your Made for Kids audience preference.
  2. Navigate to 'Basic info' and select your Country of residence.
  3. Type topical channel keywords separated by commas (e.g., 'Video editing skills, Tips and Tricks, YouTube SEO').
  4. Review General settings currency (USD) and click 'Save'.
  5. Inspect the Channel Dashboard to locate the video upload and live stream buttons.
