Overview

This video demonstrates how to manually upload and install a WordPress theme using cPanel File Manager rather than the standard WordPress administrative dashboard. This method is particularly useful when themes exceed the WordPress upload file size limit or when direct server access is required. The tutorial guides viewers through navigating their hosting portal to access cPanel, opening the File Manager, and locating the target directory at public_html/wp-content/themes. Viewers learn how to prepare their theme archive as a .zip file and upload it directly into the directory using drag-and-drop or the file picker. Finally, the video demonstrates how to extract the uploaded .zip archive within the themes folder, reload the File Manager to confirm directory creation, and return to the WordPress dashboard Appearance > Themes section to verify and activate the newly installed theme.

Accessing cPanel via Hosting Client Portal

00:00

To begin installing a WordPress theme through server files, access your web hosting account's cPanel interface. In the demonstration, the host client area provides direct single sign-on access to cPanel. While some configurations allow access via a direct URL (such as yourdomain.com/cpanel), logging in through your hosting provider's dashboard brings you to the main tools view where site files and database services reside.

  • cPanel can be accessed directly through the hosting provider's client area or standard cPanel URLs.
  • Manual installation bypasses PHP upload size limits imposed inside the standard WordPress dashboard.

Navigating to the WordPress Themes Directory

01:47

Within cPanel, open the File Manager tool located under the Files section. In File Manager, navigate to the root directory for your domain, typically public_html. From public_html, open the wp-content folder and double-click the themes subfolder. The folders shown here directly correspond to the active and installed themes listed under Appearance > Themes in the WordPress dashboard.

  • All WordPress themes reside at public_html/wp-content/themes/.
  • Existing folder names in the themes directory match the installed themes in the WordPress admin panel.

Uploading the Zipped Theme File

02:40

Once inside the themes folder, click the Upload button in the top toolbar. You can either click 'Select File' to browse your local computer or drag and drop the zipped theme archive directly into the upload window. The theme archive must be in a compressed .zip format; uncompressed directories cannot be uploaded in bulk through this tool. Wait until the progress bar turns green at 100% before returning to the file manager.

  • The theme must be packed in a single .zip archive prior to uploading.
  • Wait for the upload status indicator to reach 100% and turn green before navigating back.

Extracting and Activating the Theme

03:26

After returning to public_html/wp-content/themes, select the uploaded .zip file and click 'Extract' in the toolbar (or right-click and choose Extract). Verify that the extraction target directory is set to public_html/wp-content/themes and execute the extraction. Close the extraction log window and click 'Reload' in the File Manager to confirm the newly unpacked theme folder is present. Finally, switch to the WordPress admin dashboard under Appearance > Themes, refresh the page, and the new theme will appear ready for activation.

  • Extract the archive directly into public_html/wp-content/themes/.
  • Click 'Reload' in cPanel File Manager if the extracted folder does not appear immediately.
  • Refresh the WordPress Appearance > Themes page to see and activate the theme.
