Overview
This tutorial explains how to turn off the online 'Active Now' indicator across both Facebook and Facebook Messenger on mobile devices. By default, Facebook displays a green indicator beside contacts who are currently online, which also signals to others whenever you are active on the platform. The instructor walks through disabling Active Status directly in the Facebook mobile app settings, followed by turning off the equivalent setting inside Facebook Messenger. Disabling this feature ensures your online presence remains private, with the trade-off that you will also no longer see the active status of your friends and contacts.
Understanding Active Status on Facebook Platforms
00:00
When browsing Facebook or Facebook Messenger, active friends display a green dot indicator. This two-way visibility means that whenever you can see friends online, other users can also see that you are active. To maintain full privacy, the active indicator must be disabled on both the main Facebook application and the Facebook Messenger application.
- A green dot indicates that a user is currently online.
- Active status is mutual: seeing others' active state means they can see yours.
- Turning off active visibility requires adjusting settings in both Facebook and Messenger separately.
Disabling Active Status in the Facebook App
00:57
To turn off active status within the main Facebook mobile application, open the app and tap the menu icon (the three horizontal lines). Scroll down and expand 'Settings & Privacy', then select 'Settings'. Navigate down to the 'Active Status' section under 'Audience and Visibility'. Tap the toggle switch labeled 'Show when you're active' to disable it. A confirmation dialog will appear warning that you will no longer see when friends or contacts are active or recently active. Tap 'TURN OFF' to confirm.
- Navigate: Menu (three lines) > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Active Status.
- Toggle off 'Show when you're active'.
- Confirm by selecting 'TURN OFF' in the modal prompt.
- Once disabled, neither your status nor your contacts' active status will be displayed.
Disabling Active Status in Facebook Messenger

Turning off active status in the Facebook app alone does not automatically disable it in Messenger. Open the Messenger app and tap your profile picture at the top left corner to enter settings. Under the 'Profile' section, find and tap 'Active Status'. Toggle off 'Show when you're active', and confirm by tapping 'TURN OFF'. After this step, green dots will disappear completely in Messenger, keeping your online activity private.
- Open Messenger and tap your profile avatar at the top left.
- Select 'Active Status' located under the 'Profile' menu.
- Toggle off 'Show when you're active' and confirm with 'TURN OFF'.
- Both apps must have active status turned off for complete privacy.
